Seit 1999 forscht das Referat Provenienzforschung zur Herkunft aller Kunstwerke der Bayerischen Staatsgemäldesammlungen, die vor 1945 entstandenen sind und die seit 1933 erworben wurden. Insgesamt handelt es sich um rund 6.000 von 25.000 Werken, die diese Kriterien erfüllen und daher auf NS-Raubkunst überprüft werden. Seit September 2022 werden Provenienzangaben sukzessive in die Online-Sammlung der Bayerischen Staatsgemäldesammlungen integriert. Vorrang hatten dabei Erwerbungen der NS-Zeit und Werke, die nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg aus dem enteigneten Vermögen von Funktionären und Organisationen der NSDAP übernommen worden waren. With its Online Collection, the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen (Bavarian State Painting Collections) is making its entire holdings accessible to the public for the first time: that’s 25,000 artworks in Bavaria, Germany and Europe viewable on a single platform! It is now possible to have an overview not only of all the artworks on display in the Munich galleries – the Alte and Neue Pinakothek, the Sammlung Moderne Kunst in the Pinakothek der Moderne, the Museum Brandhorst and the Sammlung Schack – and in the other state galleries of Bavaria (several thousand works in total), but also of works in the museum storerooms (17,000 works) and more than 4000 works on permanent loan from the Munich collections to over 400 sites, some belonging to institutions which are only partly open to the public.

The Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen endeavour to provide a reference to ‘Creative Commons’ (CC BY-SA 4.0) for all works in the public domain. In the case of such works you are permitted to copy, share (through distribution in social networks), use (for publications and research, as well as for commercial purposes) and alter and process (through your own creative efforts) the images and metadata without having to apply to us for further permission.
