The Castelfranco altarpiece in the cathedral of Giorgione’s native city is one of the few works whose attribution to the artist is undisputed. A characteristic feature is the atmospheric unity of figures and landscape. In Schack’s words, they ‘form a whole that captivates irresistibly the eye and the soul’.
