Bürkel's painting "Rain Shower in Partenkirchen" has a clear-cut realistic character and a strong sense of the moment. A storm has just begun and torrential rains are sending people and animals scattering. The heavy rains cause the gutters of the farm houses to overflow, and the streets are transformed into mud and morass. Puddles form in the deep coach tracks, and tree branches have been torn out. Bürkel makes visible the immediacy of the scene: The sky is hung with threatening gray clouds and characterizes the massed power of the storm. However through the emphasis on the moment there is inherent the quiet after the storm, the quick clearing up, as is typical in the foothills of the Alps. The spray of the rain and the hazy air presage the return of the sun.
