Guardi was commissioned by the senate of Venice to document the visit of the Russian Grand Duke and Duchess in January 1782. The choir and orchestra of the Ospedale della Pietà gave a concert for the state guests, shown seated oposite the gallery, in a room in the Old Procurators’ Offices.
