With its clearly structured pictorial composition, the harmonious coloration and the atmospherically depicted landscape, Cima draws on the work of Bellini. The calm and balance of the composition encourage devotional prayer. The Child reaching out for the vessel proffered to him is a reference to the Passion—to the Anointing by Mary Magdalene.
