Influenced by Rembrandt, Victors devoted himself almost exclusively to history painting, working on large-format scenes from the Old Testament. Here, he has chosen the final scene in the Book of Tobit. Tobit’s son, Tobias, has just returned from a dangerous journey on which he was accompanied by a man who offered him protection, procured a wife for him and, finally, cured Tobias’s father of his blindness. Victors depicts the moment when the companion reveals that he is the Archangel Raphael before taking leave of Tobias’s family.
