According to legend, Francis of Paola, the founder of the Order of Minims, was borne aloft a number of times by miraculous forces, and remained hovering in mid-air, surrounded by a luminous mandorla. This oil sketch was a preparatory work for an altarpiece envisioned for a church in Tours, which was however never executed.
