In 1867 Anna Schubart married the poet Paul Heyse, a friend of both Lenbach and Schack. The portrait was painted seven years later than the Shepherd Boy and, in Schack’s words, shows the artist ‘taking a quite different path, which he continued to follow with such surprising success. Every brushstroke here testifies to study of the great masters of the genre.’
