In the foreground a woman is picking oranges from a tree while three children sit in the shade it provides. In the background huge storm clouds are gathering. Whether the figures are a mythological reference or not remains to be answered. Stylistically this work by Millet shows a close relationship to the late paintings of Nicolas Poussin. His treatment of light in this southern landscape, however, has a quality of its very own—even though the artist never actually went to Italy.
