In this painting, which reflects Böcklin’s experience of a hazardous Alpine crossing, the artist may have taken his cue from the Devil’s Bridge over the Schöllenen gorge en route to the St Gotthard pass. The fabulous beast that appears in the wild, rocky landscape symbolises the threat posed to humanity by the forces of nature.
