Angels surround the Virgin Mary and her child and are playing music for them in a hortus conclusus. Jesus eagerly takes the apple they proffer him. This can be seen as a reference to Christ’s future suffering. The peaceful scene reflected in the armour worn by St George, who is accompanying the donor, is a device Netherlandish painters liked to employ to demonstrate their artistic skills. This small winged altarpiece was used for private devotional prayer while illustrating it at the same time.
