This is a preparatory watercolour for the large painting that hangs on the staircase of the Schack-Galerie. In a letter to Schack the artist explained: `The Lorelei is really the mysterious horror that surrounds the still, silent rock with its echo; whoever calls out her name is doomed, so her picture must have something terrifyingly beautiful about it.¿
