St Martin, a Roman legionary, cut his cloak in two to share it with a beggar he encountered outside the gates of Amiens. Later, Christ appeared to him in a dream, clad in half of the cloak. The combination of a classical formal language inspired by Raphael and the vibrant palette of the Venetians is characteristic of Garofalo, who was active in Ferrara.
