Borrowed from a moralizing painting by Jan Asselijn (ca. 1610–1652), the urinating horse and the shepherd drinking greedily from the brim of his hat no doubt refer to the vice of gluttony, and the upturned bowl in the woman’s hand to the virtue of measured restraint.
