This lifelike oil painting depicts Karl Albrecht, the eldest son of Max Emanuel, Elector of Bavaria, and his second wife, Therese Kunigunde; he became emperor of the Holy Roman Empire in 1742. Joseph Vivien painted several portraits of him in oil. This portrait has been considered a work by Vivien since the 1960s. It was probably painted in 1722, when the Crown Prince married Archduchess Maria Amalia of Austria.
