These paintings on copper (see inv. no. 5272) show views of the town of Tivoli to the east of Rome in the Sabine Hills, a popular destination for excursions ever since Antiquity, and were made during the artist’s sojourn in Italy. Originally conceived as horizontal ovals, they were only expanded into rectangles at a later date.
