This work, painted on slate, reveals the degree to which Badalocchio was influenced by the painting of the Carracci and Correggio. Using the masterly executed chiaroscuro technique, it depicts Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane during the night before his death. The New Testament tells of how he gained new strength through prayer in the knowledge of his impending death, while his disciples slept.
