Venice provided Romantic artists with a unique repertoire of pictorial motifs, its dark canals and splendid palaces surviving as evidence of former greatness. Gerhardt, a painter of architectural views, specialised in Spanish and Venetian subjects, which he bathed in richly atmospheric light. This example shows the palace in which Wagner was to die twenty years later.
