Gainsborough preferred painting landscapes to portraits. In his work as a landscapist he followed Richard Wilson¿s example and depicted mainly views of the British countryside. However, inspired by Dutch and Flemish painting, especially that of Rubens, he substituted Wilson¿s Italianate mode for a more naturalistic approach.
