Jean-Antoine Nollet (1700-1770) studied theology and was an ordained deacon, but he was especially known as an experimental physicist; he was also the physics teacher of the children of King Louis XV. La Tour depicts Abbé Nollet, whom he knew well, in a slightly turned, animated pose, as if he were involved in a conversation, and gives him a watchful, concentrated gaze.
