Mucius Scaevola thrust his hand into a fire before the eyes of his Etruscan enemy as proof of his fearless patriotism. Impressed by his valour the Etruscans ended their siege of Rome. With the use of the grisaille technique and the frieze-like composition of the scene, Mantegna imitates the style of reliefs from antiquity.
