New York City Kamera/Videoaufnahmen | Camerawork: Julie Goll Mumbai Kamera/Videoaufnahmen | Camerawork: Haubitz + Zoche Schnitt | Editing: Stefanie Zoche Tonschnitt | Sound editing: Oskar Zoche The megacities of New York City and Mumbai are densely populated hubs in conurbations populated by tens of millions. Both lie on the shoreline of mighty oceans; the towers that dot their skylines have foundations just above sea level. It is predicted that as a result of global warming, large swathes of both cities will be impacted by storm surges and flooding by 2050. In fact, such flooding has already been observed in both locations. With this work from 2014/15, Haubitz + Zoche were quick to visualise the imminent danger faced by both cities. While filming the coastal area, the camera, held at sea level, is repeatedly subsumed by waves. The addition of a pane of tinted sun protection glass turns the projection into a three-dimensional visual experience within the exhibition space. The underlying urgency of “High Tide” has only increased as debates around the climate crisis continue to unfold. The work illustrates the future plight of scores of port cities around the world. The artist duo emphatically shows viewers that some of us could soon be standing up to our necks in water.
