Dou, a pupil of Rembrandt and a leading representative of the Leiden fijnschilders (literally “fine painters”) knew how to depict apparent reality deceptively well in his small-format genre paintings, executed with the greatest meticulousness, using extremely delicate brushstrokes, subtle nuances of colour, and exceptionally precise lighting.
