The Spanish pointer is a breed of dog used to search out game birds. Stubbs shows this one stopping in its tracks after catching a scent. The painting was acquired around 1800 from an English source by Maximilian Joseph, Elector and later King of Bavaria. It is still the only work by Stubbs in a German public collection.
