The subject is taken from a ballad of the same name by Ludwig Uhland, in which the description of a nun's excessive love is given an ironic slant. As director of the Nymphenburg porcelain factory from 1847 to 1856, Neureuther produced designs for mural decoration to be painted on porcelain. This picture is based on one of those designs.
