An unidentified young man is shown in the dress of the Spanish Court at the time. His alert look is directed at the viewer; his right hand rests on his hip with his arm bent. The painter has executed individual areas—the hands and parts of the collar—using a few, skillfully placed brushstrokes but not elaborated on them. It can be assumed that these are an early indication of the non finito aesthetic that is especially evident in Velázquez’s work from the 1640s onwards.
