The Franciscan monk Peter of Alcántara (1499–1562) was canonised in 1669. He founded the Alcanterine Reform Congregation that was named after him. This painting shows a miraculous event: the saint and a lay brother, who is holding fast onto Peter’s robe, are crossing the River Guadiana in Extremadura by walking on the water. The picture has long been considered the work of Claudio Coello; however, some experts believe that it was painted instead by Juan Martín Cabezalero, who died young.
