The struggle for political supremacy in Italy led to a number of different wars. The alliance of the Venetians with Florence, Genoa and the Pope against the Duke of Milan resulted in a battle on the Adige near Legnago in 1439. The Milanese troops achieved a surprising victory under the leadership of Giovanni Francesco Gonzaga. The son, Ludovico, who was less successful in military matters, is seen here being honoured for his father’s victory and is depicted on the right-hand side of the picture as field commander.
