Luke drops onto his knees as he draws the Virgin Mary with a silverpoint: the work of the artist depicted as a form of prayer. In the eighth century icons shrouded in legends associated with the Evangelist already existed. As Luke was the patron saint of painters’ guilds a whole professional branch was able to see itself reflected in such depictions that decorated many a guild chapel. Four versions of this painting are known. The original was created ca. 1435/36 and is now in Boston (Museum of Fine Arts).
