After his arrest Christ was brought before Caiaphas. Outrage follows his affirmation of the question if he is the son of God (Mark 14:65; Matthew 26:67): those present spit on him, blindfold him and punch him. Leaning slightly forward and suffering in silence Christ is shown crouching between his torturers who beat him to the rhythm of drum and pipes. The subtle colouration and realistic rendition of cloth, the rope and the slender hands in this early work already reveal the skill of this great colourist.
