The space in Schwind's compositions is often bounded at the rear by tall rocks, leaving the figures to occupy a narrow area in front. The hermit in this example, his hood drawn over his head, is barely visible between the two horses. A second figure appears further back on the right, in the shade of a cave. He is probably a knight who has taken refuge in the hermitage.
