This painting, one of a series of four (inv. nos. 199, 203, 255, 259), was once owned by Clemens August, Elector and Archbishop of Cologne. In 1767, the cycle was purchased by the community of Solingen and was later presented to Elector Charles Theodore. Such depictions were very popular as hunting belonged to the privileges of the nobility. Fyt met the brisk demand by adopting a rational work method: the motif of a hound biting into the neck of its victim, that appears twice, points to the use of master copies.
