Hagar wandered through the desert with her son Ishmael; their provisions were dwindling—death was near. An angel pointed the way to a life-saving well. This moment is shown in the picture. Together with its companion piece, ‘The Repudiation of Hagar’, this painting was commissioned by Count Johann Friedrich von Waldstein, later Archbishop of Prague. While the scene in ‘The Repudiation of Hagar’ is set in the morning light, this picture shows a landscape in the afternoon or early evening.
