This portrait shows Jean-Baptiste Philippe (16891768), a wealthy and influential financier, aged fiftynine. He is dressed in elegant clothing and gazes out with a slightly detached expression. La Tour uses the pastel technique in an especially subtle way in this work, with striking strokes accentuating details of the clothing and finer lines evoking blush in the face.
