This painting was long considered a work by Titian. It shows the Virgin Mary looking devoutly at her child together with John the Baptist as a boy and St Anthony Abbot, identified by his monk’s habit and the staff with a bell. Cariani created a fantasy landscape as the setting for this sacra conversazione. The masterly depicted view over the expansive Arcadian landscape was inspired by Titian, whereas the strange rock formations on the horizon, in particular, are reminiscent of the works of Netherlandish painters.
