The three panels ‘The Arrest of Christ’, ‘The Resurrection’ and ‘John the Evangelist’ were originally on the wings of an altarpiece in the parish church of St Laurenz in Cologne that was demolished in 1818. The shrine of the altar itself, most probably carved—with a ‘Crucifixion’ or ‘Entombment of Christ’—has not survived. The attribution to a successor of Bouts is based on the dating of the wood, among other factors, which would make the completion of the painting during the artist’s lifetime unlikely.
