This painting is actually a portrait although it depicts a concert scene. The two ladies are playing music; a young man is listening. It is thought that the lady in the light dress is Marianne Franméry, the wife of the composer François Étienne Franméry. The girl at the piano exchanges long glances with the man—the sculpture in the background is a personification of modesty, emphasising as such the demure character of the get-together.
