Unlike his teacher, Hendrick Vroom, Porcellis restricts his palette to nuances of grey, naturalistically capturing the atmosphere of the mist at sea beneath an overcast sky in spontaneous brushstrokes, while at the same time the deceptively real, painted wooden frame dissolves the illusion created.
