More than any other building in Spain the Alhambra epitomises the Moorish epoch in the country’s history. Interest in it, and in medieval Spain as a whole, revived in the Romantic age. Schack, too, succumbed to the magic of the palace and wrote of Gerhardt’s painting: ‘One can almost hear the splashing of the water in the fountain and the rustling of the cypresses in the wind; images from some tale in The Thousand and One Nights inevitably appear before our mind’s eye.’
