This portrait and its companion piece, which show the influence of Rembrandt, were painted by one of his most talented and successful pupils. Both were once considered to be works by Rembrandt, whose fake signature they bore. The work is directly modelled on Rembrandt’s self-portrait of 1640 in London, which in turn was inspired by the works of Titian and Raphael. The finely differentiated modelling of the face is to be noted as is the sweeping brushwork and the warm colouring using only muted shades.
