Pantoja was court painter to the kings Philip II and Philip III of Spain. The two portraits in Munich are a pair, presumably created to mark the marriage of Albrecht, who grew up in Spain, with the infanta Isabella Clara Eugenia in 1599. Albrecht and Isabella are stiffly posed in front of drapery; however, the artist shows certain delicate gestures and the hint of a smile. The robes, the embroidery work, the luxurious materials and pearls are depicted vividly down to the smallest detail.
