The landscape, with the figures of Jesus and two of his apostles in the foreground, evinces an awesome power reminiscent of paintings by Nicolas Poussin. Schack noted: ‘Like many [landscapes] by the great Frenchman, it is saturated with the magic of Italy’s mountainous regions, by the wondrous hills and valleys in the heights of Sabina and Latium, where our artist tarried so often during his long sojourn in Rome.’
