The hero Perseus has just killed the sea monster to which the princess Andromeda was to be sacrificed. He is now cleansing his hands of the monster’s blood. Amor leads Andromeda, now liberated, to Perseus as she is to be his bride. Several sea nymphs look on in wonder as the aquatic plants, on which Perseus has placed Medusa’s head, are transformed into coral when touched by it. This theme comes from Ovid’s ‘Metamorphoses’; the idea for the composition is based on a drawing by Nicolas Poussin.
