This portrait of Prospero Lambertini, who became pope in 1740, follows in all details a 1746 oil painting by Pierre Subleyras at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. It is likely that the pastel was created in the artist's workshop. Unfortunately a large part of the centre of the surface has been abraded and destroyed.
