Executed for the high altar of a church in Spilamberto near Modena, this picture is a late work by the master painter who dominated Bolognese art in the first half of the seventeenth century. Classic ideals of beauty and pathos are characteristic features of his work. Through his sublime use of colour, flooded with light, Reni suggests a view of paradisiacal spheres to devout viewers. The work’s particularly fine execution that gives it its plastic and luminous effect results from his use of silk as a support.
