On the banks of a river in a southern landscape with cattle and a backdrop of ancient ruins, half-draped figures, male and female, play music for a young faun to dance to. The mythological figure of the horned forest spirit—half man, half goat—with a human torso and goat’s legs and tail was considered the protector of farmers and shepherds, and their fields and livestock. The sculptural programme of the ancient temple complex on the right of the scene is similarly pastoral in theme.
