Angels are supporting the Throne of the Trinity as the Virgin kneels in front of it and is crowned the Queen of Heaven. Four rows of angels accompany the ceremony on the mandora, recorder, harp, shawm, trumpet, lute and fiddle. The merchant and alderman of Cologne, Johann Rinck (d. 1464), kneeling on the ground, and his first wife Gertgin (Gertrud) Blitterswich (d. 1439) were among Cologne’s wealthiest citizens and helped finance the building of St Columba’s from where this panel originated. It may possibly have been donated posthumously by their son, Dr Peter Rinck.
