Together with ‘Park Landscape’ (inv.nr. 14716) which is, too, on display at the Alte Pinakothek and four additional pictures, this painting was once part of a cycle that was probably used to decorate a room. Neither of the pictures gives the impression of a real landscape. While the temple ruins in this painting are a clear reference to the Pantheon in Rome, the building has been modified in characteristic fashion and supplemented by such elements as the famous ‘Horse Tamers’ on the Piazza del Quirinale.
