"Woman Tying Her Sandal", an almost life-size sculpture, is a replica commissioned in 1817 by Crown Prince Ludwig after Schadow's own original from 1813. The sculpture shows a young woman who is sitting on a stone block in order to tie the sandal on her right foot. She is simply clad with a cloth that is fixed around her waist, so that her child-like, somewhat thin upper body is exposed. A curious contrast to her youthful body is her rather elegant stance, as well as her pensive mien; certainly not a depiction of a vulnerable, carefree child. The girl seems to already be sensing the approach of adulthood, reflected in her somewhat melancholy expression. This duality may just be the work's attraction that accounts for its considerable fame, which, in turn, lead Schadow to make no less than seven replicas.
