Titian painted this ‘donna nuda’ for Guidobaldo II della Rovere, Duke of Urbino. The aura of eroticism exuded by the young woman has traditionally led her to be identified as Venus, although the picture contains no attributes associated exclusively with that goddess. ‘Why are these forms eternal, whereas the moderns rarely produce anything more than beautiful nude models?’, asked Jacob Burckhardt in 1855. ‘Because’, he answered, ‘the motif and the moment and the light and the colour and the composition all originated and developed in Titian’s mind and spirit. Anything created in that way is eternal.’
